This year marks the 30th anniversary of Brain Injury Awareness Month! Every year during March, the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) engages with the public to raise awareness about the impact of serious brain injuries.
BIAA has chosen “Change Your Mind” as the theme for the 2018 to 2020 campaign. The purpose of the #ChangeYourMind public awareness campaign is to inform the general public about how frequently brain injuries occur, as well as the needs of people with brain injuries and their families.
The #ChangeYourMind campaign aims to:
- Empower Survivors of Brain Injuries
- Promote Available Support
- De-Stigmatize Brain Injury
- Promote the Need for Prevention
- Advocate for More Research
- Empower Caregivers
According to the BIAA, roughly 1.7 million children and adults in the United States suffer traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year. The BIAA also reports that 795,000 people sustain an acquired brain injury (ABI) from non-traumatic causes each year. The Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center says that a total of 383, 947 U.S. service members have been diagnosed with TBI in the past 18 years.
