COVID-19 Safety Tips for the Workplace

With coronavirus case numbers reaching all-time highs in many U.S. states this week, including in California, now may be a good time to reevaluate preventative safety measures—especially as businesses continue to reopen and people return to their normal routines.

How to Stay Safe from an On the Job Infection

According to CNBC, California is one of 30 states where coronavirus case numbers have grown by 5% or more in the last week. To combat this increase, businesses have been encouraged to enforce strict safety measures.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released safety guidelines for facilities that are reopening. Businesses with high-risk employees, such as people over 65 or with underlying health conditions, and those with a high volume of customers and/or employees sharing a space should take extra precautions, although these guidelines can be applied everywhere.

The CDC’s COVID-19 safety recommendations for workplaces include:

  • Avoid sharing items and food, especially equipment and supplies that cannot be easily cleaned, sanitized, or disinfected
  • Conduct routine non-invasive health checks in accordance with applicable privacy laws and regulations
  • Have all employees practice good hygiene, especially frequent hand washing and/or the regular use of hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol
  • Plan for COVID-19 related scenarios, such as what to do if an employee comes into work with symptoms of the coronavirus
  • Post information on how to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in high visibility areas
  • Provide handwashing and/or sanitizing stations near high-use and high-touch areas
  • Restructure workspace layouts as much as possible in order to follow social distancing guidelines
  • Stress that anyone who has come into close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19 self-quarantine for 14 before returning to work (or for as long as they show symptoms themselves)
  • Wear face covering and/or face shield at all times

Some of the above are only actionable by those who hold managerial positions, but there are still plenty of things you can do to keep yourself safe even if you don’t work in such a role.
